Summer vacation in New England

Posted on Saturday, August 1, 2009 in photography, travel

Lisa and I had a wonderful vacation in New England, spending the majority of it in Bar Harbor, Maine.  Lots of hiking, lots of shooting.  And lots of people.  I think because of how busy it was, Acadia NP didn’t really match up w/ my expectations but was nice to get away nonetheless.

For the last couple days, we made a quick dip down to Killington, Vermont to meet my sister-in-law Lynn.  Fun small towns, some pottery, a good hike, and a bit of cheese & ice cream finished up the trip quite nicely.  Outside of Colorado, Vermont might be my choice for a destination for my dream log cabin.  Just has that vibe about it….  Plus, it has a fun motorcycle rally every year:  http://www.killingtonclassic.com/

Here’s a slideshow of our trip (images still being processed, sadly….  So lazy…)

With the holidays approaching quickly, I wanted to get this finished but I also wanted to take what I learned from my first SoFoBoMo project and make something better. Hopefully this hit the mark; regardless, I was happy with the result. If there is a chance we’ll cross paths over the holidays, I can show you the hard copy, but for those who I won’t see for a while, here is an online version. It’s best seen in full-screen (there is a button in the upper-left corner). By all means, would love to hear your comments.

While not at the wedding or rehearsal, Lisa and I explored Long Island for a bit. The rain held back for a while so we tromped along the coast. This boy was fishing with his father.

The Knot is tied!

On a fine day in September, Chris and Ruth tied the knot. Chris has been a great friend for some time and I had the privilege of standing with him. Lisa and I had a fantastic time – was one of the most fun weddings I’ve been to.

We also had a blast shooting it and playing with my new Nikon 70-300mm. As will be evident shortly, this was no f/2.8 lens (and certainly no D3), but hopefully we collected enough faces and moments just for the memories.

A big congratulations go to Chris and Ruth and best of luck to them both.

The next day we docked in Skagway. Everyone was very much looking forward to the evening train ride into the mountains. Even though it was the only bad weather day we had, it was fun walking around the town and down to the Skagway cemetery and waterfall.

The highlight was definitely the White Pass train ride. Beautiful mountains and even saw a bear.

The Skagway photos are here or you can see all of the Alaska photos (so far) here.

After two days on the boat, we were very much looking forward to our first excursion. We took a walking/photography tour in Juneau, going to the Treadwell Mines and the Mendenhall Glacier. The Treadwell Mines were amazing – watching the surrounding forest reclaim industrial structures made us wish we had more time.

Lisa and I recently went on a two week vacation, spending a week w/ her family on a cruise to the Inside Passage of Alaska. Having wanted to see Alaska for longer than I can remember, I have been excited about this trip for months. You can view the trip photos here on my flickr page (I’ll be adding more as they get processed).

MoabCon 2008

Posted on Saturday, June 14, 2008 in hpc, photography, technology, travel

The guys over at Cluster Resources threw one amazing inaugural conference on Moab, their HPC/clustering scheduling software. While in the area, we had a chance to do some shooting in the area. Was a lot of fun – next year might take an extra day or two to hit some nearby hotspots (say Canyonlands or Arches Nat. Park).

Here are some photos from the trip: Flickr
